The Philosophy of Outcome-Based Design
Outcome-based design is the theory of starting a process by understanding the desired outcomes and then working backward so that every decision along the way is made in support of that final goal. The outcomes we design for are not things, such as ductwork or rainwater cisterns, but qualities, such as good health, thermal comfort, and ecological resilience. Architecture and engineering give us the suite of tools to achieve the outcomes that our clients value. At the end of the design exercise, whether mechanical engineering, energy generation systems, or organizational sustainability strategy, the outcome-based design process ensures that the desired outcomes are realized.
